The Kalia Foundation – A non-profit organization developed to preserve and extend the Polynesian Seafaring tradition. There are three basic programs:
Restoration of the Millenium Kalia – the largest canoe in the world. Its story will unfold to be that of the greatest migration of man in maritime history, and is the flagship of Tonga. Our future goal is to showcase this magnificent vessel on Euaiki Island in order to show the sailing world that the kalia is a sailing craft not just of history but will help shape the design of the future. www.kaliafoundation.org
Euaiki Island Seafaring Centre – we set up this project to mirror the arts of the traditional seafaring life of the Tongan people. We are building small traditional outriggers so people can learn and experience firsthand the sailing and fishing techniques of the past. We will also have an educational library of books, films and pictures www.kaliafoundation.org
Flying Proa World Speed Record Attempt – we have taken the design advantages of the kalia, proa, drua, waka, which are the names used for a shunting vessel throughout the Pacific region. We made a high-tech version of the shunting vessel for the world speed record attempt. So far we have achieved two to two and a half times wind speed, which is phenomenal for a sailing craft. www.kaliafoundation.org
